Extending A Compassionate Hand To The Rohingya Refugees

LANGKAWI, MAY 2015 – With thousands of ethnic Rohingyas from Myanmar fleeing sectarian violence in their country still stranded in the Straits of Melaka, humanitarian needs for these refugees continue to grow as the dilemma surrounding this long-standing crisis continues to deepen.

In efforts to provide humanitarian aid to the migrants, the Better Malaysia Foundation (BMF), assisted by personnel from Berjaya Langkawi Resort recently handed over 10 tonnes of goods to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) in Langkawi. The two trucks full of provisions consisted of medicines alongside ready-to-eat foods like biscuits, instant noodles, cereal, milk, energy drinks and drinking water.

MMEA representative, Captain Salim Ahmad and his men were on site to receive the aid at the island’s maritime base where personnel from Berjaya Langkawi Resort, led by their General Manager, Chris Niuh, unloaded the goods for storage, prior to being channelled by the authorities to the boat people in the Andaman Sea.

“It is of great hope that this aid initiated by the BMF and the simple gestures from the team in helping out to deliver the provisions to these migrants adrift at sea can ease their sufferings or starvation at the very least,” commented Chris Niuh, the General Manager of Berjaya Langkawi Resort.
