on Redang Island Clean Up Day 23 - 25 October 2009
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Berjaya Hotels & Resorts initiates to bring people together to experience the beauty of the underwater marine world through Redang Islang Clean-up Day on 23 till 25 October 2009 at Berjaya Redang Resort. Held annually, the Redang Island Clean-up Day promotes continuous awareness on the endangered species of corals and other underwater marine life. Simultaneously, the resort aims to nurture these conservation efforts to help maintain a harmonious balance between nature and daily human activities.
Endorsed by PADI Australia (dive industry’s leading non-profit organisation) and Scuba Symphony, this event also aims to cultivate and promote the importance of preserving and protecting the environment and ecological systems of Redang Island for the benefits of the future generation. Apart from exercising its role as a socially responsible corporate citizen, the resorts grasp this opportunity to invite divers and non-divers to experience an extraordinary journey of creating a kinship with marine biological. Berjaya Hotels & Resorts is offering affordable packages to divers and non-divers to join hands and show their support and contribute to this meaningful event.
“We are taking this opportunity to prove to people that by gathering many hands around can change the current state of our ecosystems. Also, with these hands we are able to conserve the ecosystem and improve it to a better state,” said Peggy Tan, Group Director of Berjaya Hotels & Resorts.
Also, Joanne Marston, Asia Pacific Manager of Project AWARE stated, “Project AWARE is pleased to support Berjaya Hotels & Resorts for Redang Island Clean-up Day event. Better data means better decision making. Most divers and volunteers recognize the importance of data collection to drive positive change for our oceans. But there is more that we can do. We urge all divers to take the plunge and enter data into the Global Marine Debris Index.”
Every year an estimated seven billion tons of debris enter the world’s oceans. The consequences are devastating as each year nearly one million birds are killed by aquatic litter and an estimated 100,000 marine animals, including dolphins, whales and sea turtles, choke or get tangled in debris. Project AWARE volunteers will once again contribute to the compelling Global Marine Debris Index (oceanconservancy.org). In 2008, this snapshot revealed a staggering 3,216,991 cigarette/cigarette filters and 1,377,141 plastic bags were collected throughout the year.
Added Johnny Chew, PADI Asia Pacific Regional Manager, “Berjaya Hotel & Resorts has been strong supporter of Project AWARE cleanups and activities. We’re delighted to have them on board this year and be involved in this exciting conservation event.”
Participants will be welcomed with a goodies bag, namely items like, diver marker, mask strap, bandana which are known as diver’s favourite goodies and vouchers sponsored by Sports Toto, Kenny Rogers and 7-Eleven. An array of activities is lined up aims to encourage participants, such as, reef conservation seminar, beach cleanup and land and underwater photography contest. Scuba Symphony is showing their support by sponsoring diving seminar, helping divers to understand more on diving. The seminar teaches participants on underwater photography skills and ways to maintain underwater camera. There will also be conservation seminars by PADI on ‘Underwater Conservation” to educate participants on the importance of coral reefs to our eco systems. A photography contest will be held to capture the meaningful event. The contest will be divided into two categories, namely Underwater Photography and Land Photography. Participants stand a chance to win two Epoque Japan underwater camera worth RM1,245.00 each sponsored by Scuba Symphony, holiday getaways by Berjaya Hotels & Resorts, air tickets fully sponsored by Berjaya Air and meal vouchers by Kenny Rogers.
