Berjaya Times Square Hotel, Kuala Lumpur Holds Voluntary Clean-Up As Part Of CSR Efforts

Hotel Associates Get Together And Do Their Part In Sustaining Nature’s Growth At The Perdana Botanical Gardens

KUALA LUMPUR, DECEMBER 2015 – Staff and volunteers from Berjaya Times Square Hotel, Kuala Lumpur (BTH) got together on 16 December in support of providing a clean, healthy and safe environment for all by holding a clean-up and conservations event at the Perdana Botanical Garden, one of the iconic scenic spots in Kuala Lumpur.

As the organisation acknowledges that the preservation of the environment is one of the most current and important issues, BTH chose to contribute to amp up environmental preservation awareness to its employees as well as promote corporate social responsibility. This initiative is organised jointly with Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) which is also the management body for the gardens.

Sprawled across 91.6 hectares of land in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, BTH identified that the gardens required huge maintenance efforts to ensure that this piece of nature is well-kept in order for the public to enjoy the simple serenity provided by the gardens amidst the hustle and bustle of the city.

A total of 41 associates from BTH participated in the activities which started off with the clean-up of litter and leaves lined up along the jogging trials and recreational areas of the park. Equipped with bio-degradable trash bags, gloves, caps and t-shirts, the volunteers split into two teams – one on foot and the other on bicycles to cover more grounds, and also segregated the collected rubbish from the fallen leaves which were used for the second segment of the programme.

With the collected leaves, the team proceeded to carry out tasks like mulching which involved lining the soil surface of the various young plants in one of the designated areas. This gardening practice enables the organic materials to work as a fertiliser to improve soil conditions as well as to absorb the excessive amounts of water due to the monsoon season as a basic measure to provide better survival chances for the newly planted trees.

As part of the park maintenance tasks, the BTH volunteers also performed activities like weeding and cleaning of the park trails with waterjet equipment. Last but not least, the hotel associates worked together to put up over 100 botanical markers throughout the garden to enhance the garden’s presentation and facilitate the public to identify the many plant species found in the garden.

The clean-up activity was BTH’s last environmental initiative in a busy 2015 CSR programme, with many activities having both the needs of the local community as well as the environment at heart. This was concluded by a lunch treat and a cake cutting ceremony for the DBKL staff at the park especially prepared by the hotel’s kitchen team for the occasion.

“Besides targeting the environmental aspects of our CSR commitment while providing a platform for positive staff engagement, we are all about playing a part to contribute towards social betterment, no matter how small our efforts may seem,” said Mondi Mecja, General Manager of Berjaya Times Square Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.

“As a hospitality brand that focuses on the surroundings we operate in, we are only too aware of our obligations to the environment as well as the local community. This CSR programme has included caring for the environment and benefitting the locals who visit the gardens. Each year we plan our activities which evolve and mature according to the needs of the community. We will be embarking on a similar set of initiatives for 2016,” he added as he affirmed the hotel’s dedication towards such causes.
